Our
goal is to achieve a transformational improvement in travel choices for
the people of North Merseyside, West Lancashire, and the surrounding
areas.
Our roads are heavily congested and getting to work takes longer and longer. Now many people are concerned about the environmental impacts of the way we live. People are looking for choices.
The decades of ‘cost-cutting’ on our railways have resulted in a significant reduction in our public transport services. Now, at last, government is waking up to the idea that investing in our railways make sense.
Our proposals, outlined in the slide show opposite, make sense, and not only in narrow economic terms. Whether it is for employment, education, health care, shopping or leisure, our proposals will give local people a greater set of choices in how they can access these services. And we should not forget that there are people who do not own a car.
Our work is now to lobby and persuade everyone in the rail industry and government that our proposals make sense and achieve ‘value for money’. So far, the local transport authorities (Merseyside and Lancashire), the train operators (Merseyrail and Northern), and Network Rail have all agreed that our proposals make sense. Our local MPs are giving their total backing. While there are still hurdles to overcome, we are optimistic that we can see progress in the not too distant future.
Please come back over the next few weeks and months as our website is in the process of being developed from this single page.
